This 4,200 square-foot, 2 bed, 2-½ bath condominium is located in a Parisian-inspired, limestone-clad Gold Coast building. The space is a modern urban refuge for a young Chicago couple. The residence has a biaxial layout. Transversely, the Master-Bed Suite is separated from the Guest-Bed Suite for privacy. Longitudinally, the Living/Dining area is separated from the Kitchen by a corridor of end-grain wood.
The linear plan forced the Master Bath into a windowless pocket of space. Solution: Natural light is borrowed from the bedroom with a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, frosted glass partition; in turn offering a warm glow on the bedroom side.
Monolithic limestone accents are the only homage paid to the building’s exterior. Walnut, glass, and cement tile round out the spare palette of materials.
The all-walnut Den, raised one step and askew to the rest of the residence, is the focal point of the public space, yet offers ultimate privacy.
